Continuing Education Unit
These courses are perfect for the elementary school teacher looking to broaden their classroom skillset.
Guided math is a great instructional strategy. In this mini-course we focus on how to take your guided math work to the next level. In this engaging, educational and resource-filled workshop, teachers will learn how to take guided math and math workstations to the next level. They will see how to create standards-based small group lessons that rock, workshop management strategies that work, and assessment tools that inform instruction! Dr. Nicki will teach about making guided math groups and math workstations integrating this structure with your current curriculum, leveling the guided math group activities and math workstations so that they make sense with each unit of study, and assessing throughout the year in ways that drive instruction.
In this Math Running Records Mini-Course, Dr. Nicki Newton will help you learn everything you need to know about effectively implementing Math Running Records. Through demonstration and hands-on practice, this workshop explains what running records are, how to administer and analyze them, and how to use them for ongoing classroom assessment to focus your teaching of small groups and individual students. Come learn how to personalize math instruction! Sign up today!
Dr. Nicki is really excited about this Kindergarten workshop! In this workshop we will have deep conversations about grade level specific routines, strategies, workstations, word problems and assessments. You will leave this session engaged, excited and empowered for next school year. The Mini-Course is fast-paced, fun and full of idea!
In this online session, Dr. Nicki Newton will help you to think about and prepare for the first 20 days of implementing a math workshop. In this 4 module session we will discuss planning for and implementing the first 20 days with engaging, standards-based activities, math anchor charts and assessments that reveal what you need to know! We will talk about strategies for setting expectations, building routines, norming behaviors, and creating procedures that will ensure success throughout the year. Building a “community of thinking mathematicians” in which students are engaged, enthusiastic and independent is more likely when “community building” has taken place in a purposeful and meaningful manner.
Guided Math is one of the best instructional strategies ever! In this online course Dr. Nicki will discuss the details of making this come alive in your classroom. Topics include forming groups, leveling activities, the 5 types of guided math lessons, assessing students. This course is based on Dr. Nicki’s popular book, Guided Math in Action We will focus on teaching and learning the priority standards for grades k-2.

Math Workshop can be a mathematically magical space. Throughout the 3 parts of math workshop, students learn to become competent, confident, courageous mathematicians. In this online course, Dr. Nicki discusses each of the components of Math Workshop and provides detailed information about the introduction (energizers, routines, mini-lessons and problem solving), the student activity period (math workstations and guided math groups) and the debrief (share and reflections). This course is based on Dr. Nicki’s popular book, Math Workshop in Action. The examples will focus on grades k-2.

Math Workstations are such powerful, engaging, rigorous structures for learning. I know from first hand experience that when workstations are data-driven, standards-based, intentional spaces, they can and do improve student achievement. Take the course and learn how to assess for, plan, design, implement and assess the work done in math workstations. This course is designed around Dr. Nicki’s upcoming book on Math Workstations in Action (k-2). The examples will focus on grades k-2.

Problem Solving is such an important aspect of school mathematics. Even students who can solve basic problems, often get thrown for a loop when they are in word problems. In this course, Dr. Nicki explore how to get all students to solve word problems through scaffolded experiences. There is a discussion about templates, rubrics, checklists, models, tools, reasoning, the many different problem types and assessments. Teachers will walk away from this course knowing exactly what to do. This course is designed around Dr. Nicki’s upcoming book on Problem Solving in Action (k-2). This course is geared for grades k-2.

In this course, we are going to look at and create Math Toolkits that should be a part of any ongoing Math Workshop or Guided Math Program. We will discuss specific concrete, paper, and digital tools as well as templates! Both individual student toolkits and the Classroom as a Toolkit will be talked about extensively. We will explore in detail what they are, how to use them, when to use them, who should use them and where to use them. Math toolkits are one of the major keys to building mathematical proficiency.

This course is about how to design and implement effective math interventions. We will look at various assessments, intervention implementation plans, and differentiated activities to provide scaffolded access to grade level standards. We explore various teaching formats and ongoing formative assessments that provide struggling students with the assistance they need. So often, educators are left to figure out what to do on their own. This course will give you a path to follow.

This course explores how to organize, set-up and implement the LEVELING of the WORD PROBLEM workstation. The k-2 course explores addition and subtraction.
The 3-5 course explores multiplication and division.
The focus of the course is ONLY on LEVELING the workstations. It goes in step-by-step detail of each course and what to put at each level. By the end of this course you will be able to LEVEL all the workstations in the Fluency Workstation.
